Dressing Up The Gown

Tampa Bay Weddings' 2008 Gown Guide | By Nicole Poggi

Tampa Bay Wedding Gowns, bridal gown guide, premiere bridal guideThe walk down the aisle is changing. Instead of the traditional solid white Cinderella-gown, today's brides are opting for a more sophisticated, personalized look. Inspiration is being drawn from a glimpse back in time. Modern brides are favoring vintage style gowns with delicate fabrics and detailed embellishments.

From shiny beads to couture flowers, adornments are in the spotlight for this season's brides. Silk flowers are being found intricately placed on flowing gowns. Large flowers accent the waist or bring a hue of vibrant color to the shoulder while smaller embroidered flowers decorate the bodice or embrace the length of the gown.

Moving fabrics are a must for brides of 2008. The days of stiff fabrics that barely allow the bride to breathe are history. It's important for a bride to feel comfortable, and that is why brides are leaning towards sheer fabrics and flowing layers of chiffon. These delicate fabrics create an elegant, refined and classic look.

"Pick up skirts are very in as well as fit to flare gowns," said Lindy Bengston, owner of Malindy Elene in St. Petersburg. "We're seeing a lot more beading this year too, really making it a fantasy wedding gown."

Covering up is not always a bad thing. Lace sleeves, bold straps, and exquisite jackets and cardigans are sneaking into wedding ceremonies this season. Although strapless gowns still remain popular, straps of tulle or satin are skimming the shoulders and adding flair to this year's gowns.

Dropped-waist gowns with large flared skirts are popular shapes too. The cinched waist with wide belts are also an option, but no matter the shape of the waist, brides are looking away from traditional and finding unusual looks in styles such as off the shoulder, Grecian-inspired gowns.

The vintage-inspired tea length dress is also making a comeback. The hemline falls just below the knee and typically ends above the calf. A throwback to the 1950s and 60s, it is perfect for a less formal wedding.

No matter the style, it's clear that this spring's brides are embracing details. From embroidered designs to bead and flower accents, the once simple white gown is getting dressed up and allowing today's brides to look graceful and distinguished.
