Meadowood

Romance in the Wine Country
Retreat to Meadowood in California's Napa Valley | By Ronda M. Parag

The rush of the ceremony and reception are over, now it's time to find peace, tranquility and focus on each other. Located in Napa Valley, just an hour and a half from San Francisco, discover Meadowood. Set in the midst of the California wine country, Meadowood offers 85 exclusive cottages, suites and lodges nestled among towering oak and pine tress on 250 acres. The resort is a member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux, an association of privately owned elegant hotels throughout the world. Meadowood is also a private club, serving as a cultural and social center for the area's influential residents.

The French-country styled guest rooms are elegantly appointed in crisp, white comfy down linens and feature high-beamed ceilings, white wainscoting and private porches. In the evening, sip champagne and snuggle by a roaring fire in front of the stone fireplace. Romance flourishes with a soak in the oversized jacuzzi tub, large enough for two.

While the honeymoon couple may not want to leave the room, there are plenty of activities in and around the property. The resort offers resident professionals in golf, tennis and croquet. For the tennis buff, volley on the seven courts nestled among the trees. The nine-hole executive walking course is narrow and short enough to putt through in an hour and 45 minutes. Or dress the part for a playful game of croquet. Meadowood requires guests to wear traditional white and flat-soled shoes.

Indulge in a pampering treatment (or two) at The Health Spa. Offering numerous fitness classes and restorative body and beauty treatments, the spa will help relax and refresh the soul. Also, enjoy a handholding hike or rent his and hers bicycles and tour the expansive grounds.

Schedule a tour of local wineries with Director of Wine Education, Gilles de Chambure, Master Sommelier. De Chambure's entertaining tales and engaging personality make for a delightful afternoon. His knowledge of the area and local connections allow access to the most exclusive vineyards. In nearby St. Helena, explore the art galleries and boutiques along the main street.

Offering a variety of dining options there is no need to leave the resort. The Restaurant offers fine dining with an emphasis on flavorful, fresh and healthy ingredients. Many of the fruits and vegetables in the evening dishes are freshly picked from the garden that morning. The chef's tasting menu with paired wines will delight the palette. The outside deck at The Grill overlooking the fairway offers a casual lunch or dinner. During the warm, summer months, try a snack or fruity frozen drink at the Pool Terrace Café.
