A Treasure Worth Seeking

The Art of Specialized Couples Photography | By Ronda M. Parag | Photography by Dave Alderman

Couples today want to capture more than the wedding day, they are looking to capture a moment of their life. The latest trend in photography for brides and their grooms is to create nontraditional images and shoot images similar to a fashion or commercial shoot. The standard "day of" shots are expected, but couples are seeking artistic photos that capture the depth and emotion of their feelings for each other.

"The best photos are taken under controlled circumstances," said photographer Dave Alderman of Dave Alderman Imaging. He suggests having couples either the next day, or shortly after their wedding, schedule a "Day of Reflection" shoot. "The additional shoot is structured as if we were doing a fashion shoot or commercial assignment complete with lighting setup and hair and makeup artists," said Alderman.

Today's photographic technology allows just about anyone to take a decent photo. Suddenly everyone becomes a photographer and brings their camera to take candid shots throughout the entire wedding day. The era of social media including Facebook tempts brides to want every single image captured and posted online immediately. The time constraints of the wedding day, simply do not allow enough time to capture the emotions that many couples are now seeking.

Tampa residents Teri Bohling and Andrew Smith, who married in April in St. Augustine, decided to add an extra day to their photography package at the suggestion of Alderman. "Dave's vision was to capture a lifestyle rather than just an event," said Teri. "He wanted to blend the emotion of the weekend with the natural beauty of St. Augustine." It is impossible to capture these images on the day of the wedding. Everyone is rushed and emotions are high. "He is truly brilliant behind a lens," said Teri.

The cost for the "Fashion Couple Shoot" starts around $4,000 and includes the custom one-of-a-kind album and treasure case. Each album is viewed as a piece of art and is individually commissioned. The images are a reflection of the couple's personality and loving feelings captured at various locations or in a studio. The final album contains approximately 20 images and is printed on the finest fine art substrates.

"Our intent is to use the photos for a personal keepsake," said Teri. The treasured keepsake serves to record the feelings of the bridal couple in a unique and nontraditional format that will be an heirloom for future generations.
